Cupping or gua sha?
Cupping
Glass or silicone cups gently lift the skin and muscle. Most people describe it as a deep, slow pull, the opposite of a massage. Best for broad areas like the back and shoulders.
Gua sha
A smooth tool is stroked along tight areas to release tension and bring fresh blood flow to the muscle. Best for the neck, upper back and areas that feel ropey or stuck.
Both pair well with acupuncture, and I often use them in the same visit. See how I treat chronic pain
About the marks
Cupping and gua sha can leave round or reddish marks. They look dramatic but rarely feel sore, and they usually fade in three to seven days. Have a wedding or a pool day coming up? Tell me, and I’ll plan around it.
Desk-job necks
Neck and shoulder tension from hours at a screen, and the headaches that come with it.
Active bodies
Recovery after workouts, long runs or physical work, when muscles stay tight for days.
Stubborn backs
Upper and mid-back tightness, often as part of a chronic pain Care Plan with acupuncture.
