How Acupuncture Helps Sciatica Pain at the Root
Sciatica is one of the most misunderstood types of pain I see in my clinic. Many people think of it as “back pain,” but sciatica is actually nerve pain, and nerve pain behaves very differently than muscle soreness or joint stiffness. Sciatica often presents as sharp, burning, shooting, tingling, or numb sensations that travel from the low back or hip down one leg. Sitting, driving, or even sleeping can become uncomfortable very quickly.
What’s important to understand is that sciatica is a sign that the sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed, often due to inflammation, muscle tension, disc involvement, or long-standing compensation patterns. Stretching alone rarely resolves sciatica, and relying on pain medication only masks symptoms while the underlying irritation continues.
Acupuncture works especially well for sciatica because it addresses the nervous system directly. By stimulating specific points, acupuncture helps calm irritated nerves, reduce inflammation, and improve blood flow to the affected areas. This creates an environment where the nerve can heal rather than remain stuck in a constant pain signal loop. Many patients are surprised by how quickly their symptoms begin to change once their nervous system is supported.
At Oliver Acupuncture, I don’t just treat where the pain travels — I assess where the problem starts. Sciatica is rarely isolated to one spot, and effective care often involves addressing the low back, hips, pelvis, and overall nervous system regulation. When these pieces are addressed together, patients often experience not only pain relief but improved mobility and confidence in movement.
If you or someone you know is struggling with sciatica, shooting leg pain, or nerve-related symptoms, help is possible. An initial consultation allows us to talk through what’s happening and whether acupuncture is the right fit. Call 402-560-3051 to get started.
